UAB, founded just 50 years ago, is ranked as the #1 young university in the US and tenth in the world

Research Environment

Center for Neurodegeneration and Experimental Therapeutics

The Center for Neurodegeneration and Experimental Therapeutics (CNET) is the home for basic and translational research on neurodegenerative diseases at UAB. Our 16 labs have over $10M in annual research funding focused on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and ALS. CNET is home to one of the nine Udall Centers for Excellence in Parkinson’s Disease, and our Training Program in Neurodegeneration is supported by a T32 grant from NIH.

Department of Neurology

Administratively, CNET is supported by the Department of Neurology, one of the largest in the country in terms of both research and clinical volume. The department is ranked #17 in NIH funding with around 125 active clinical trials and sees >2,500 inpatient admissions and >40,000 outpatient visits a year, providing a rich environment for translational research.

Comprehensive Neuroscience Center

The Comprehensive Neuroscience Center (CNC) is the University-wide interdisciplinary research center that unites neuroscience research at UAB. Its over 300 members represent the breadth and depth of neuroscience research at UAB. The CNC supports neuroscience research cores, sponsors symposia and retreats, aids grant preparation, and organizes community outreach events like Neuroscience Cafe.

Alabama Drug Discovery Alliance

Drug discovery at UAB is uniquely driven by partnership with Southern Research, an independent research institute that is formally affiliated with the University and has a highly successful history of drug development. UAB and Southern Research have partnered to form the Alabama Drug Discovery Alliance (ADDA), which funds UAB researchers with promising targets to support assay development, high-throughput screening, and medicinal chemistry to develop lead compounds.

Life in Birmingham

With a metro population around 1.1 million, Birmingham offers a rich array of entertainment and cultural options, with a thriving food scene and a revitalized downtown. Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachians, the area provides great hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities, and the Gulf's white sand beaches are a short drive away. Excellent public school districts, great neighborhoods, and low cost of living make Birmingham a great place to live and work.
